Ergh, I have a very old very glitchy iPod, so do not give up hope! Every so often they just play up. Give it a rest, charge it fully, try again.
Or do what my bf did: pull it apart, give the drive a strong whack and stick it back together again. Worked perfectly! (But I suspect he has uncanny tech magic!)
