Koran, moving forward
Jun. 5th, 2005 12:35 pmSo. I've created a livejournal community, at reading_koran. Given that it's a politically charged topic, it seemed simplest to create the community such that only members can post to it. I think I've sent out membership invitations to all the people who told me they were interested -- but if you were one of those people and haven't received anything, let me know. I'd be happy to include anybody who wants to take part in the discussion, so if you'd like to opt in, just tell me and I'll send you one of these invitation things (assuming I've correctly figured out how to do that).
I'm hoping to start reading next week -- let's say Monday, 6/13. Does that work for people? Or is that too soon? Several of you said you already had copies, and I didn't hear a lot of response about starting in June, so I assumed this would be okay. But if anyone needs more lead-time, speak up.
As for the pace of the discussion... Well, I have two possible plans to propose. The first is more free-form; it would aim for about 20 pages per day. (My copy has 446 pages; I'm guessing most editions are similar, but if I'm wrong, tell me.) Under this plan, starting 6/13, we'd all try to read at more or less the same pace, and we can all post to the community with whatever's on our mind as we read. I'd definitely be posting there every couple days at least, but this way anybody can start conversations on whatever aspect of the text they feel like.
The second possibility would be a little more structured, and probably move a little slower. I'd set up a schedule of, say, 50 pages per week, but translating that into specific chapters (i.e. Week One = Chapters 1-3: The Opening, The Cow, and The Family of 'Imran) and I'd post to start conversation on those chapters each week. Everyone would still be free to post their own questions and/or comments, but this would make it a little more seminar-esque.
I'm more inclined towards the first option, but would happily do either, or combine them, or whatever. Really, I just want to read the book and have smart people to discuss it with, and beyond that I'm not feeling picky. So I'd welcome any input on how people would like this to go.
Thoughts?
