Jan. 8th, 2005 07:29 pmI've just read Joy Comes in the Morning, a novel by Jonathan Rosen. All the way through, it made me think of my dear friend, the velveteen rabbi; a major character seemed to be based on her. There was one line in particular which cracked me up:
"Rabbis...are the religious equivalent of strippers. Everyone has a private spiritual core but only a few people exhibit it in public."
(It should perhaps be noted that it's a young, liberal, female rabbi who makes this observation in the book, with reference to how people react to her upon meeting her socially.)
