Remember a while back when I posted pictures of jewelry I'd made?

Well, I've made a lot more; beading turns out to be the perfect activity for when you've got small, unpredictable periods of time to work with and not much brain. And I've finally set up an Etsy store, under the very apt rubric Emily Procrastinates. (Hat-tip to [livejournal.com profile] sanj for coming up with the name.) I have this vague hope, you see, that my beading habit might become self-supporting. Because I want to buy more beads, and to make more things, and I can only wear so many necklaces myself.

Anyway. Just thought I'd put that out there. If you or your friends feel like enabling this addiction of mine, I'd be most grateful. (And if you're local, we could work out some kind of cash deal that would involve a discount for you and a circumventing of Etsy and Paypal fees for me. I'm just sayin'.)

Thank you! I was getting blindingly bored having to come up with sales copy for each item, and my husband suggested I try the J. Peterman approach of just writing a random story to go with each thing. So then it became a lot more fun. (And it made me realize that the copywriters at every other catalogue in the world must have been so jealous of their counterparts at J. Peterman. Really, which would you rather do: spend your day coming up with yet another way of saying "this is a blue sweater, which you should buy," or spend your day writing an improbable and charming anecdote about a movie star and an aviator and their outing in the French countryside? But I digress.)

OMG, honey, I want, like, ALL OF THEM. (Or at least the blues and greens.) (And January.) (Eeeep.)

(I would like to try some of these on, to see where they fall on me. Is possible?)

You can absolutely try stuff on. I'm also happy to make pieces in other sizes, since I sort of default towards that-which-fits-me, and I recognize I'm a tad on the small side. (Just a tad.)

Mmmm, lovely. I will be pondering this.....

I've done a few more things that haven't made it to Etsy yet. (Somehow, taking photos and uploading them is a prohibitive lot of work.) So if you're really interested, come on over someday.

So much gorgeousness (and so cheap! You could totally get away with asking for more.)

I definitely want something. Hmm. Shinies.

I was thinking the same thing about prices. The peices are lovely, and the descriptions, too! I might have to order a couple soon. I need to get myself an Etsy store, too.

Thank you! The prices are mostly just the cost of materials; like I said, I want the hobby to be self-supporting. I'm not looking to turn a profit here. And I'd be totally psyched if people ordered stuff -- the idea that things I made were adorning people I liked would just be too cool. :-)

I found the Etsy setup to be something of a pain in the butt, though that's largely a matter of Paypal being annoying (and entirely necessary, which I hadn't realized when I started) and photography being utterly Not My Thing. Those issues aside, I'd say their system is pretty straightforward.

Thank you! Re pricing, I thought about that a fair bit, but I'm really just trying to make this hobby support itself; I don't expect to turn a profit. I'd be just as happy if there were no cash involved, but if people took away finished pieces and handed me bags of new beads in exchange.

I'm also happy to do custom work, just so you know. So if you like the style of one but the beads from another, or that sort of thing, just let me know.

Okay, I haven't tried it yet, but I imagine I could order off of Etsy and somehow not pay shipping? Since, you know, kind of unnecessary? :D I'm really liking the January pieces. Cassie was born in January.

I'm fairly sure Etsy applies the shipping fees automatically; there's no way to tell the site that you're local.

But you could drive to my house and hand me some cash, and I could hand you the necklace and earrings, and Etsy doesn't need to get involved. Say $25 for the set, including any resizing? (I'm really fond of those pieces too. I also have a January birthday, but mostly I just love the color of garnets. That it's my birthstone is just gravy.)

Wednesday's great, just let me know roughly when you might come by.

Meanwhile, I've taken the listings off Etsy to make sure nobody else buys them, so if you notice they've disappeared, that's why. :-)

After lunch? 1ish?

I might bring more than enough $, as I'm also generally always in the market for blue and purple things. :D

Thanks! And yes, D helped with the photos, though I took some of them myself. (The more artsily focused ones are all D, though.) I would be most honored to be a gift source for your womenfolk.

Your names are WONDERFUL. You write beautiful stories; I've known that for years, and they make the necklaces that much more exciting, as though they can transport you like amulets. I'd like to hang out with Queen Mab for a day.

(When you first mentioned J. Peterman, I thought of S.J. Perleman, which is another catalog I'd like to read some day...)

I'd be glad to see some of yor necklaces up close too, when there's a chance.

Thanks so much! Writing the names and descriptions had loomed like an unpleasant chore until I realized there was no reason I couldn't have some fun with them.

I'd love to have you come see things up close -- and, for that matter, I'd love to see YOU up close (I owe you an email, I know; I've been terrible about communication this last week or so). I'm leaving town tomorrow, though, and will be mostly gone until 4/15. Could we make a date for after I come back? My calendar's completely open from the 16th onward. You could come over for dinner, or S and I could meet you for a walk somewhere stroller-friendly (the rail trail is fabulous, I've found)...

I'd love to get together with you and S. after 4/15 sometime. I'm working a day shift Thursday and a night shift Friday next week, I think... I'll check the board tomorrow and email you.
