The iTunes visualizer is spectacularly good at soothing a sick, cranky baby.

I'd always wondered what it was for. But man, on the "jelly" setting, with some James Taylor, suddenly the kid who'd been crying and fussing all day was content to sit on my lap for 30 minutes, just watching the pretty colors.

Thank you, good folks at Apple.

Sick! Oh noes! He didn't get the death-cold, did he?

I don't know; it's his first cold, so I have nothing to compare it to. I'm pretty sure he picked it up from one of his cousins; we saw them 12/29, and he first showed symptoms on 1/2. Congestion and coughing, mostly. I'm actually about to bring him to the doctor, as the cough is starting to worry me.

There's such a thing as Baby Vicks...not as strong as the full-strength stuff. Seeing as they've been warning against cold and cough medicine for wee ones, it's probably one of your best bets, if you don't already have it.

He's hanging in there. He has a nasty cold, and a cough that's clearly upsetting him, but he's a sweet little guy nonetheless. And we saw his doctor today, and she thinks he'll be feeling better in another few days, so that's reassuring.

It occurs to me that experimentation and creativity are the keys to surviving such parenting trials. Hooray for finding soothing techniques in unexpected places. :)

Yeah, it was purely by chance. There's a James Taylor song I sing him as a lullaby, and I was exhausted and had run through all the things I usually try, and wondered if he'd react to hearing the song as recorded. Which he did, but he was still fussy, and with the song playing we were just sitting there in front of the computer, so I put on the visualizer, and voila: instantly pacified baby.

I will definitely remember this trick.
